NOTE: Standard versions of Wirecast do not do RTMPS. BoxCast defaults to providing an RTMPS server URL and this can cause issues if put directly into Wirecast without editing. The fix is simply to remove the "s" from the Server URL (i.e. input rtmp://rtmp.boxcast.com/live instead of rtmps://rtmp.boxcast.com/live).

Key Steps to Remember

You must have a broadcast scheduled in the BoxCast Dashboard to stream with Wirecast. We recommend starting the stream in Wirecast 2-3 minutes early so that your broadcast will begin at the start time selected in the Dashboard.

For example, if your broadcast is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., start the stream in Wirecast at 9:57 to ensure the broadcast will begin at 10 a.m. Wirecast will look like it's streaming at 9:57, but our servers will only start collating data ~40 seconds ahead of time (so what viewers see at 10am will be what you were sending ~9:59:20).

Open Wirecast. Click the Output menu, then select Output Settings.

Select the Destination as RTMP Server.

From your BoxCast Dashboard, go to the Sources tab and click on your RTMP channel to get your RTMP codes.

Wirecast uses the Server URL and Stream Key from the BoxCast Dashboard.

Add your BoxCast Server URL to the Address area in WireCast, and your Stream Key to the Stream field. Once this is done, click OK.

Bonus Tip: Click Add in the bottom-right corner to save these settings.

Lastly, hit the Stream button in Wirecast — you're all set! As mentioned above, you do need to have a scheduled broadcast in the BoxCast Dashboard for the stream to be successful.

Using a BoxCaster

Another way to stream from Wirecast is to send the Wirecast to a secondary HDMI output that's plugged into the BoxCaster. Using this approach provides the following advantages:

  • The BoxCaster’s hardware encoding relieves your computer of the task of encoding the video and audio.

  • The BoxCaster can take advantage of specially designed communication protocols to optimize your available network connectivity.

  • The BoxCaster gives us the ability to help troubleshoot any issues with your broadcast, including hundreds of data points and logs our agents can look at. Wirecast provides limited troubleshooting capability.

To stream from Wirecast through your BoxCaster:

  1. Connect the Boxcaster to your computer via the appropriate cables (e.g., Display to HDMI, Thunderbolt to HDMI, VGA to HDMI).

  2. Start Wirecast. Go to Output, then select Multi-Viewer Output and Configure Displays. Change the Monitor to 1920x1280 and change the Layout to Full Screen. Change Labels to Do Not Draw Labels, then click the arrow in the window below and select Live. Click OK.

  3. Go back to Multi-Viewer Output and select the appropriately named output (might just be Display).
