A valuable benefit to having a BoxCast OTT App is the opportunity to monetize your content. As an app owner, you can set up monetization right from your OTT Dashboard. If you are the app owner and are unfamiliar with your OTT Dashboard, you will want to reference Getting Started with the BoxCast OTT Dashboard before continuing.

Here's what all we'll be covering in this article:

Expected behavior for apps + purchasing content

BoxCast offers a variety of OTT apps for you to choose from. Depending on which app you're using for your organization, they may act a little differently when it comes to purchasing and viewing monetized content.

Best practice: Encourage your viewers to purchase any subscriptions for the first time through the OTT web app, which is included in every OTT plan.

Web app

The web app is the browser based hub for all of your content. Viewers can easily create their log in, and purchase and view monetized content through this app.

Android mobile app

Viewers can log into their personal accounts and purchase content through the Android mobile app. Be sure you followed these steps to set up Google in-app purchases and set up Google subscriptions.

Apple mobile (iOS) app + Apple TV app

Viewers can log into their accounts and view monetized content, but may not purchase monetized content through Apple iOS and TV apps.

Roku app

Viewers can log into their accounts and view monetized content, but may not purchase monetized content through Roku apps.

Linking a Stripe Account

Stripe is a payment processing platform that enables businesses to securely accept numerous types of payment methods, both online and in-person. It is widely used for e-commerce, subscriptions, etc.

To get started monetizing your content, click on the Products page and then the Get Started button. Stripe will prompt your to either log in to an existing account, or to set up a new one.

Adding a New Product

Once a Stripe account has been linked, navigate back to the Products page in the OTT Dashboard as needed and click the New Product button.

Next, you'll populate the product fields:

  • Name - Required. Name your product clearly, so you can easily recognize it when assigning videos.

  • Description - Optional.

  • Price - Required. You can enter any amount between $0.01 to $999,999.99 (USD).

  • Recurring Subscription - If you'd like for the product to have a recurring subscription, you will toggle this on and set a recurring duration between 1-12 months. If you plan to sell this product pay-per-view, you should skip this section (and leave the toggle off).

Gating Content

After your product has been created, you can start gating (putting your content behind a payment "gate"). You can gate content from the BoxCast Streaming and OTT Uploads pages, as well as Categories.

Find your video or category of choice and click the edit button.

Next, click on the Gate tab

  • Toggle the Enable switch

  • Select the type of Gate, whether Pay-Per-View or Subscription

  • Select the Product

  • Click the Save button

Creating a Bundle

You can group multiple categories under one gate by creating a Bundle, regardless of their individual gating status.

EXAMPLE: You may have categories for Men's Soccer and Women's Soccer that you'd like to include together under a single Soccer package.

Create a Package if you haven't already, ensuring you've assigned the Men's Soccer and Women's Soccer categories to the Package.

Add a Product and name it something like Soccer.

Edit the Soccer Package, click the Bundle tab, enable, and select your Soccer Product, and then save.

Archiving a Product

Archiving a Product removes the payment gate from any associated content. It will not delete any video content, only the "product" designation.

Click on the button indicated below (trash).

Review which content (if any) will be impacted by archiving the Product.

Purchasing Content

Viewers must register and purchase their subscription through a web browser. Once the purchase is complete, they can sign in and watch on Apple TV, Roku, iOS or Android apps. Here's how they can do that:

Register

Click the Register button from the web app.

Provide a Name and Email, create and confirm your Password, and then click the Register button.

You may view and make account changes by clicking on your profile and selecting My Account. Click on Manage Billing to add a payment method, update your billing information, and review your invoice history. This is also where you go to cancel subscriptions.

Pay-Per-View

Click on the event you wish to purchase, and then click the Buy Now buttons.

Enter the required payment information and then click the Pay button.

Subscribe

Find the subscription of choice, click the Subscribe button, followed by the Subscribe Now button.

Enter the required payment information and then click the Pay button.
